There has been a hype of one-person business models on the internet and on medium. Maybe it's the rise of entrepreneurship and individualization that has led to this mindset.

I won’t say one-person is a horrible idea. This is the philosophy which I have used for my job search and it worked wonders for me. But its important for you to know the drawback so you can adapt.

Drawback 1:- You won’t achieve great success

You might have a great amount of talent and even believe that you can do everything by yourself. I understand you completely.

When I was studying engineering, First I started as a mechanical engineer. After gaining a good amount of proficiency in mechanical design. I decided to diversify myself into the electronics field since I had an interest in automation.

This worked great for my career and attracted job opportunities. However, it took a great amount of time in the development of complex robotic projects.

If I had a team during that time then we could have done things 3 times faster. Hence, having a great team beats talent.

Drawback 2:- Long time for implementation

If you be a one-man show then you do all the work by yourself. A mark of a good businessman is to delegate a task and free himself for higher-level task.

If business owners do a lot of things by themself then they are working in the business, not on the business.

Your goal is to transition from working in business towards working on business. This will make you move faster and implement the ideas better.

Drawback 3:- Lack of quality and efficiency in your work

Not everyone can be great at everything. It takes 5–10 years to master a skill so you can only have a limited amount of expertise with you.

The Startup founder who does all the marketing, Sales, Engineering and finance by themself will not only take forever to grow but also will not be efficient to do all the task correctly.

Some things are better to leave for professionals so you need to “Delegate and Elevate yourself”. This will leave you free time to play by your strength.

Conclusion

While the one-person business model is definitely a good start. That is how I progressed in my engineering career and started my company Macoma Tech.

As I progressed in the development of my business. Many people tagged along with me which made the work more easier.

The one-person business model is a good starting point but don’t stay there for too long.
