How we made the most creepy award ever
As you can guess from the image. Yes we did make few creepy awards which were in the shape of a baby holding a bulb.
Almost everyone I showed the award to called it ‘creepy’ and hence I named the title of the article after it.
Regardless of the trophy design, The idea behind it was to honor young innovators at a conference and promote the idea of a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset.
Here I will show you the process of how we made 9 baby awards:-
Step 1:- Manufacturing Strategy
This client came to us with a typical requirement ‘We need it urgently’. Hence, time is of the most importance.
For fast manufacturing, we decided to put more detailed parts of the baby in resin printing and less detailed parts in FDM printing.
The base of the trophy we made was out of wood with a dark veneer finish and an acrylic plate bend on the curve. Text on acrylic was done by UV printing and bending through a simple heat gun and pressing on wood.
3D design was already given by the customer so we moved to manufacturing.
Step 2:- 3D Printing
To have a mixed of cost optimization and speed. The most detailed parts like face, arms and bulb was made in resin. Rest of the pieces like the legs and body was made in FDM printing.
Since I have an army of FDM machine so we were able to print all the parts in 1 days and paint finishing process started.
In parallel the resin printing was continued which took 4 days to finish. By this time the surface finishing of body was also done so we could join everything together.
Step 3:- Finishing
It was a challenge to surface finish all the babies. Some of the places like Coller were hard to reach but we still tried to polish those areas. But overall it was a satisfactory finish.
Step 4:- Wooden Base
The base is made from MDF with a covering of veneer wood finish. The veener wood is bend on semi circle on both sides for complete coverage. So the split line is hardly visible.
Now its time to bring everything to life!
Step 5:- Paint & Gloss Finish
We applied the metallic color of gold, silver and bronze. Then finished it with a gloss coating.
Apparently we made a mistake in painting wrong quantity of of color. With gold as 1 qty, silver as 3 qty & bronze as 5 qty.
The most tricky parts was removing the lacquer. After the lacquer dried, we did some wet sanding to remove the gloss coating and sprayed different color.
Most important part is that its fixed.
Conclusion
Here is the full view of all the trophies. The view is mesmerizing for some and creepy for many. But the project was well finished and we made the delivery just on time
Hope you guys learned something and keep on making
